Packaging Planning

How to Write a Retail Packaging Brief for Seasonal Decor

Define the selling pack, shipping arrangement and quantities at each packaging level. Share these requirements with the product, packaging and artwork teams before the structure and graphics are finalized.

Describe the route from packing to display

Identify whether the item will travel in a retail distribution network, ship individually to an online customer or follow both routes. Describe the unit pack, inner pack and master carton separately, including the quantity contained in each.

Include the retailer's current packaging instructions when they apply. Summarize the requirements that affect structure, dimensions, labels and delivery, and identify the responsible contact for resolving questions.

  • Selling presentation

State whether the customer needs to see the product through an opening or window, whether the pack stands on a shelf, and whether a display tray or assortment arrangement is required.

  • Physical constraints

List shelf limits, maximum packed dimensions, preferred orientation and any handling restrictions. Include protruding parts, accessories and components packed separately.

  • Pack hierarchy

Record units per retail pack, retail packs per inner pack and units per master carton. Use the same item references as the product specification.

Approve structure and artwork as separate deliverables

Review a representative product in the proposed packaging before finalizing artwork dimensions. Check fit, part separation, removal and repacking, as well as the way the decoration is presented when the box is opened.

Assign an owner for each text and graphic element. Product names, barcode data, instructions and destination-specific text should come from the responsible project parties and match the approved item specification.

  • Structure record

Keep a versioned pack drawing, component list and packing arrangement. Show the intended position of accessories and any protective pieces.

  • Artwork record

Provide the approved logo files, product images, copy and barcode data. Check the artwork against the correct pack drawing and record the final approved version.

  • Evaluation plan

Agree the distribution conditions to be represented, the sample configuration, evaluation method and acceptance criteria. Define how damage to the product, finish and packaging will be recorded.

Release the product and packaging together

Before release, reconcile item references, quantities, approved artwork and the packing instructions. A late change to a product dimension or accessory can affect the packaging, so include both teams when reviewing changes.

Discuss packaging with DAK as part of your seasonal decor project. Share the distribution route, retail presentation and buyer requirements so the proposed pack and evaluation scope can be considered alongside the product.

Practical answers

Frequently asked questions

Can one package serve retail stores and direct-to-consumer shipping?

It may be possible, but both distribution routes need to be considered. Discuss whether the retail pack requires an additional shipping carton and evaluate the actual packed configuration for each route.

When should packaging development begin?

Begin with the product brief. Establish the channel, pack quantities and size constraints early, then refine the structure around representative product dimensions and samples.

What should change when the product dimensions change?

Review the pack fit, protective components, carton dimensions, artwork drawing and packing instructions. Document the revised configuration and decide whether further evaluation is needed.
